Is it necessary to make any special effort to ensure that a new sofa or closet lasts much longer than specified in the warranty? Not at all!
Here’s a checklist of simple rules for using and taking care of your furniture that we recommend you follow.
For all furniture in the home
Don’t misuse furniture. The rule seems obvious, but it is not always adhered to. For example, in the linen drawers of the sofa are stored heavy things, or the dining table in a small kitchen serves at the same time and the area for cutting food. The result of such actions for furniture is unpredictable.
As we have already noted, you should not place furniture close to heaters. The correct distance between them is at least one meter. Dry hot air is bad for both cabinet furniture and upholstered furniture (however, as well as high humidity).
Also destructive for furniture is direct sunlight. Does the apartment face south or east? Provide thick curtains or blackout curtains to prevent furniture finishes and fabrics from burning in the sun.
If a piece of furniture does not have a special heat-resistant coating, do not place anything hot on it. It is a classic to put a mug of tea or coffee on the desktop and be surprised by the appearance of ugly round marks that you can’t get rid of. Use coasters.
Another taboo for furniture surfaces – contact with sharp objects, abrasive detergents and aggressive household chemicals. Hard surfaces should not be wiped with compounds containing alcohol.
Few people read the instructions, but at least make an exception for this one. Keep a memo with recommendations for maintenance of moving mechanisms and try to follow them: to change faulty hinges, rails or microlifts is troublesome and not always cheap. For cabinets, dressers, shelving units and shelves
Fasten the item to the wall if it is recommended by the manufacturer: an overturned dresser or shelving unit can easily break and even cause injury, especially if there are children in the house.
Do not overload the cabinets. The manufacturer will certainly indicate in the instructions the rate of load per shelf or drawer – do not exceed this figure. Keep glass shelves in the zone of special attention.
In closets, regularly vacuum the sliding door guide areas, then the mechanisms will not fail for longer.
Also, don’t leave cabinet doors open – this is the main cause of sagging fronts.
For kitchen furniture
After assembling and installing the kitchen, the sealant at the joints of the elements needs time to dry completely. Therefore, do not start using the lower sections and the countertop until at least 24 hours later.
Get in the habit of wiping the countertop dry immediately after you’ve done all the work in the kitchen: this will keep the connecting seams from getting liquid and bloating the allmeaninginhindi countertop.
And if you opted for a countertop with a laminating layer, buy a good hotplate. Pots, pans and other “just off the stove” cookware placed on such a surface can cause the laminating layer to peel off.
Condensation accumulates in the dishwasher and oven installation areas. It is necessary to monitor this and remove it from the surfaces in time, otherwise the wooden elements can swell.
For upholstered furniture
Sides and armrests are a weak point in the designs of sofas and armchairs. Therefore, when rearranging do not grab them: it is better to move the object by slightly lifting it above the floor and holding the lower part of the frame.
Wear yourself and children to sit on the armrests and backrest. Also harm the structure of children’s habit of jumping on the couch.
Remember that you can not allow water to get on the upholstery, and especially wash stains from the surface of the sofa or chair with water: it will leave streaks. For this purpose, special compounds are suitable – you will find them in our selection.
For beds
Got a bed with a lift mechanism? Make a rule of thumb to lower the base, applying even pressure to the edges. And try not to lift the base when there’s no mattress on it: the mechanism can open with a sudden jerk and cause injury.
It is a bad idea to stand with your feet on the bed: the base can easily break because of the excessive point load on the base’s slats.
About the mattress. At least once every two or three months, flip it from one side to the other and change the direction “head – feet”. This household habit will help to avoid uneven wear and tear.
Washing stains with water is also not worth it: use foaming agents. And the best way to clean the mattress from dust is with a vacuum cleaner with special furniture biographycon attachments.
Pay attention to how exactly you lie on the bed. Some people like to put one knee on it first and then lie on the bed all the way down. Mattress manufacturers would not approve this: the same constant point load spoils the mattress design. It is better to sit on the bed first and then lie down.
