Name and Explain Two Laws That Protect Citizens Against Gender Based Violence

Gender-based violence is a global issue that continues to plague societies around the world. To combat this issue, governments have implemented laws to protect citizens from gender-based violence. In this article, two of these laws will be discussed and explained.

    Law 1: Overview

The first law is the United Nations Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW). This is an international treaty that was adopted in 1979 by the United Nations General Assembly. It aims to eliminate gender-based discrimination and violence against women and girls. It defines discrimination against women as “any distinction, exclusion or restriction made on the basis of sex which has the effect or purpose of impairing or nullifying the recognition, enjoyment or exercise by women, irrespective of their marital status, on a basis of equality of men and women, of human rights and fundamental freedoms in the political, economic, social, cultural, civil or any other field.”

    Law 2: Explanation

The second law is the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR). This is an international treaty that was adopted in 1966 by the United Nations General Assembly. It is designed to protect the civil and political rights of individuals, including the right to life, freedom from torture, freedom of expression and assembly, the right to privacy, the right to a fair trial, and the right to equal protection under the law. It is also designed to protect individuals from gender-based violence, such as sexual abuse, domestic violence, and other forms of discrimination. The ICCPR requires states to take all appropriate measures to prevent and protect individuals from gender-based violence, as well as to provide victims with access to justice and effective remedies.

These two laws are important in the fight against gender-based violence. They provide individuals with protection from violence and discrimination, as well as access to justice and remedies. It is important that governments implement and enforce these laws in order to ensure the safety and security of all citizens.
